Department of Psychology
The Psychology program has existed at NMSU for almost 80 years, with the initial emphasis on teacher education. The Psychology Department offers broad training in psychology at the undergraduate level, with a strong emphasis on experimental psychology. In addition, the department offers opportunities for hands on experience in research and in field placements.
Current graduate programs in the department are cognitive psychology, engineering psychology, and social psychology . The number of graduate students in the department has been maintained at approximately 50 students over the past decade. About two-thirds of those students are working towards a Master's degree and one-third are working towards a doctorate. All baccalaureate level students who enter the graduate program enroll initially as master's students. Upon completion of the master's degree, a student may be admitted into the Ph.D. program, contingent on the recommendation of the student's master's committee and the vote of the whole faculty. In addition, students who have completed their master's degrees at another institution can be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program.
