ALUMNI NEWS AND GOSSIP

Hal Frasch, with help from Greg Bury, Mike Parzynski, and Nora Slanski

In the Spring '96 issue of the Lehigh Alumni Bulletin, there is a nice write-up on Ed Geller '66. It mentioned his love for music and Alfa Romeos, and also his career change into the automotive field. Ed and wife Shayna live in Morristown, NJ.

Paul Pilzer '74 was also mentioned in the Bulletin. Paul is managing partner of Zane Publishing, one of the world's leading CD-ROM educational publishers. He has a new book out, God Wants You to Be Rich.

Bill Selick '80 has given up the fun and games of the engineering world for a life of "excitement" in the Big Apple working for CS First Boston, an investment banking firm. So far, it isn't too exciting, Bill says. The pay is far better, but the hours far worse. Joe and Ann Hotung '80 were married in May '94 and are living in Ormond Beach, FL.

Mike Sicinski '81 let us know that he and wife Carrin are expecting their fifth child, due in August. Number five will join Teresa, Ashley, Jeanine, and Kate. Anyone betting on a baby girl, here?

Wayne Baker '82 and Anne Goldman were married on 21 October, with a big group of TEP/TAK alumni present. Attendees included: Felix Endico '80, Dan Bernstein '81, Bruce Kerman '81, Rich Lowe '81, Hal Frasch '82, Neil Siegel '82, Larry Bertan '83, and Rich Zieger '84 (hope I didn't miss anyone). Neil 'Da Bugs' Siegel '82 and wife Lisa have a new child. Jason Eric Siegel arrived on 13 February at 12:30 a.m. Proud Papa e-mailed me to report that everyone was happy and healthy --if not just a little exhausted. Neil has kept in fairly close contact with Bill Reilly '82 over the years. Bill and family just recently moved to Raleigh, NC. They've moved into temporary housing, so we don't have a permanent address on Bill in NC, yet.

John Elwood '84 was in the Army from 1984-90. He is now in the New Jersey Air National Guard. John is the Base environmental Manager at Atlantic City Airport. He picked up his MBA from George Washington University along the way. He's also a volunteer firefighter. John and his wife, Little Sister alum Jenny (Lorenz) Elwood '86, have two kids, Tom (6) and Cecilia (4). Jenny teaches at Camden County Community College and is working on her PhD at Drexel University. Rich and Barbara Zieger '84 just bought a new house in Cherry Hill, which they will move into in July. Barbara just started a new job at Campbell Soup, nearby to hubby's work site at Lockheed-Martin.

Russ and Bev Johnson '85 work for Wycliffe Bible Translators, a missionary organization. They live in Dallas, TX and work at Wycliffe's International Linguistics Center. Mike Saldi '85 has been in contact recently with both Rob Sidrow '85 and with Rob Greenfield '85 --a.k.a. Bonehead. Mike wrote that Rob and family just bought a home in West Chester, PA. With a 175-year old home in this well-established community, Mr. Greenfield apparently has more than his share of home projects to do. Mike advised us to steer clear of West Chester these days, lest Rob put them to work! (jes' kidding, Rob!) Mike got together with Frank Friedman '85 and Bob Jones '85 recently, playing foozball, drinking beers, and smoking cigars --just like old times. I spoke with Frank, also. As many alums from that era remember, he was once a member of one of the many "house bands" that literally shook Warren Square in the 1980's. He is once again playing with a group, as keyboardist for the Ootaire-Jenkins Band. Frank lives in Maryland, currently, and works for Allied Signal.

We mentioned the engagement of Dinesh Rao '86 in the last issue, we also found out that Dinesh and fiancee Kathleen have moved to Portland, Oregon. It looks like Joe and Donna Cicchiello '86 are headed out Portland way, on June 1. Joe's company, Mentor, is transferring his division out there. Joe and Donna expect to come back east in a year. Donna still gets together with LS alum Leigh (Coombs) Daniel, LS alum Joanne (Tirjan) Loew, and Janet York. Joanne is now expecting baby number two. Dave Hill '87 and wife Tracy are expecting a baby in August. Dr. Dave had a write-up in the latest Lehigh Alumni Bulletin. He is currently completing a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Yale.

Dave Holly '88 and Maggie (Cruz) ran off to Jamaica on 16 December and got hitched. Dan Toffolo '88 and Janet (Gillis) were married on 1 July 1995. We got word that Dave and LS Alum Renee (Goldman) Schwartz (both '88) are new homeowners in Hamden, CT.

Kirk Aulenbach '90 is employed by Hospital Computer Systems. He and wife Geneva have a daughter. They bought a house in Northfield, NJ., a couple of years ago Heilke Welling '90 and wife Sarah report the birth of Scott Welling on 18 January. The picture Greg Bury '87 received of Scott shows him already wearing an "Airborne" patch on his sleeve.

Eric Brown '91 married Jennifer (Gillespie) in March '92. They are living on F.E. Warren AFB, in Cheyenne, WY. He is a missile combat crew instructor, and will make Captain this year. Eric suggests that, to strengthen our organization, we must convince Dan Leeds '91 to finally admit that the Philadelphia Eagles are a better football team than the Giants. [Here, here! But to be fair, rebuttals will be accepted] Dave Estock '91 is engaged to a young lady named Megan (at press time, I don't yet have her last name). They met in the Wilkes Barre, PA area, where both of them grew up. A May 1997 wedding is planned. Dave Del Monte '93 --a.k.a Captain Chaos-- is getting married on May 24th to Wendy Flynn. Mike Parzynski '93 and Sean Pecora '93 will be in the wedding party. The couple will honeymoon in Hawaii and settle down in Port Chester, NY.

LS alum Linda Busch is living in Albany, NY. She works as a specialist in group processes: team building, facilitating renewed missions, setting goals, and conflict resolution. LS alum Cindy (Schick) and Joe Bartera just bought a house in the Bethlehem area. Plans are to host all future alumni gatherings and water-balloon fights there --JUST KIDDING! LS alum Anne (Schofield) and Greg Torvinen built a 3200 sq ft log home in Reno, NV. Anne works in nuclear medicine, she met Greg when he was her patient. Big news on Aimee Bonadio, she's engaged to a fellow named Terry Burton, who she showed-off at the recent Lehigh-Lafayette gathering. Aimee and Terry plan to tie the knot on 5 October 1996. Carol Chesko has been living in Las Vegas, Nevada for several years, now. She works for the power utility company in Nevada. She enjoys riding horses out there, and recently bought a mustang of her very own. Chris (Simone) Watson has been married for a year (or two now?) to husband Matt. They are living in Philadelphia.

As mentioned before, Mrs. Sabol has moved into a home care facility. The Sabols were the most wonderful neighbors and friends that the chapter could have had. They put up with noise at times and always looked out for us. They were particularly watchful when the campus was vacant during semester breaks. I was amazed, how incredibly observant the Sabols were for us, yet how tolerant they were of us. I remember an incident in which another neighbor wrongly accused us of throwing eggs at his house. "The boys wouldn't do that!", Mrs. Sabol said emphatically to the neighbor. Even though we're now grown men and many miles away from Warren Square, we will always think of ourselves as "her boys". If you would like to write to her, her address is:

D.C. / BALTIMORE-AREA EVENT

2nd Annual to be Held in Potomac, MD in September

Hal Frasch

Mike and Shannon Saldi '85 will host the 2nd annual TAK alumni gathering in the Baltimore, MD / Washington, D.C.-area. The event is planned for September, but the exact date is not yet set. Mike has a good piece of ground around the house, so it will be mostly an outdoor event, if the weather allows.

If you are interested in attending, call me at phone numbers listed in the editorial box. If you live far away, and would be traveling, there will be folks eager to house overnight guests, like last year.

I hosted last year's event in Alexandria, VA. We had a pretty good turnout, 40 people total including family / kids. Guests from "my era" included rare sightings of Mark Altman '80, Neil Siegel '82, and Dave Hanson '82, and we had a few folks who traveled from PA and NJ. We had snacks, sandwiches, beer, and soft drinks. A group of kids played games, while in the back, adults kept the beer-pong table busy for part of the night. Everyone seemed to have a real good time.

TEP's MOST-WANTED

Hal Frasch

No, these aren't fugitives from justice (at least, not that we know of). They're folks that we've just plain lost touch with. If you have address updates or leads to their whereabouts, please contact me (see "Editorial Information"). Also, if anyone has old Lehigh campus phone directories, please contact me. These are sometimes helpful in providing parents' addresses of missing folks, particularly for younger alums. I already have directories from 1979-80, 80-81, 81-82, and 82-83.

ROAD RALLY & FAMILY PICNIC

MEET AT ANNEX 20 JULY @ NOON

Last Year's Picnic Was a Blast!

Hal Frasch

Mike Parzynski and the Social Committee are finalizing plans for this year's Road Rally and Family Picnic. Plans are to meet at the Annex at noon on Saturday 20 July. That will be the starting point for the Road Rally. For those not running the Rally, maps will be provided to go directly to the picnic site. We planning, once again, for a fun and family-friendly event.

Last year's picnic was the best-attended TAK event I can remember, even as an active or as a very young alum (as you all saw in the picture in the Fall '95 Newsletter). It was well-done, and it was an awful lot of fun: for alums and for the families and kids. The folks who put it together really focused on making it fun for everyone: with a great cookout, games, grab bags, water balloons, ice cream, volleyball, soft-drinks, etc. --although we never did quite make it to the softball.

The menu was the best ever, with a clambake in addition to the traditional picnic favorites. They really succeeded beyond all expectation. The beautiful weather and the great turnout helped. I think we were all so glad NOT to be trying to have the picnic on a rainy, cold April or May day (why didn't we wise up years earlier?). One alum said to me months afterward: "my kids still talk about it". Oh, yeah the Rally was awesome too -but definitely the product of a twisted mind!

ALUMNI ON THE INTERNET

OR: THE TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE

Hal Frasch

Our Alumni Association is developing a Web page. Pete Foltz '85 has offered his creativity, labor and server storage to set-up and maintain it. Under construction, it is very sparse on content right now, but it may soon include: our newsletters, board meeting minutes, current schedule of events, pictures from recent alumni association events, list of e-mail addresses, and links to pertinent Web sites. One thought is a message board, on which you could leave messages for other alumni. The Web address is: http://www-psych.nmsu.edu/ ~pfoltz/tep.html. If you have any ideas or comments on content of the page, please contact me (see my info in "Editorial Information").

Lehigh University has a re-mailer set up just for LU alumni to converse. When you send electronic mail to the remailer address, it automatically resends it to everyone on the list. Most of the talk centers on LU sports, campus goings-on, "strolls down memory lane", the "Engineers" vs. "Mountainhawks" mascot debate, and other such LU nonsense. People do seek employment and employment candidates over the service, as well. To subscribe to the service, send an e-mail to: listserv@lehigh.edu, and put the following in the body of the message: "SUBSCRIBE ALUMNI-L {your name}". The remailer address (to send messages out to everyone) is: "alumni-l@lehigh.edu".

Our e-mail list of alums and friends continues to expand. Click here to see the latest list

LEHIGH CAMPUS NEWS

Greek Life, Good Scholar Election Success

Hal Frasch

One big piece of news on campus was the success of a charity event started by our chapter several years ago. The Good Scholar Election, benefiting the American Cancer Society, raised over $20,000 from students, faculty, and alumni, including some of our own. Run now by Zeta Psi, the event was originally conducted by TEP. Sterling Spatz started this event, in order to honor Dr. Cohen, soon after his own recovery from a bout with cancer.

To gain a look into the Lehigh campus, I've held a subscription to the Brown & White over the last several years. While it doesn't read as well to me as it may once have (that probably has more to do with the hardening of my mental arteries than with the paper), I've found it is a much more telling picture of the campus than the scrubbed-and-polished Alumni newsletter. I've found out that the social life of undergraduate students at Lehigh is not dead! It still seems to revolve a lot around fraternities and sororities, but fortunately it has also branched out with the creation of other campus events (thank goodness!). I get the strong impression, however, that beer is not an unknown quantity on campus, even among those who are --how shall we say-- chronologically-challenged. Fraternity life still goes on.

There are significant changes, to be sure. The Greek system is downsizing some, or at least gender-shifting. While there are several more sororities on campus now than before, a few active fraternities have closed. In addition to temporary disciplinary closings, there have been a couple of financially-related shutdowns. There may be a few more in the short-term. Currently, several active chapters are having trouble meeting capacity.

Sororities and "dorm-rats" are eyeing properties on "the Hill", as the rest of campus has chronic housing shortages and sororities continue to live nomadically, moving house-to-house in temporarily-vacant fraternities or dorms. An ad-hoc group of faculty, staff, alumni, and students recently studied some of these issues and presented their Residential Environment Committee Report. This report is sure to foretell at least some of the changes in the future of Lehigh's campus scene. If you are interested in reading it, this report can be downloaded via Lehigh University's web site.

From our group's perspective, it may be better that we do not have a weak active chapter trying to survive the current environment on campus. Timing may favor our coming back to campus after the shakedown has finished and the situation solidifies.

A LETTER FROM DR. ALVIN COHEN

[Editor's Note: I received this letter from Dr. Cohen asking me to express his appreciation to our group. I felt it more appropriate to share his words directly. The appreciation, however, is truly all ours. The contributions and expressions of sentiment our group sent were a small tribute to the generosity of Dr. Cohen with his own time and spirit over many years. Thank you so much, Dr. Cohen!]

8 December 1995

Hal,

Whenever you do your next newsletter, please include, from me, my deepest appreciation to my "brothers" who honored me on the announcement of my retirement. In honoring me, however, all of you honored yourselves. You lived up to the ideals of Tau Epsilon Phi. How beautiful it is to see a group with which I have been associated for so many years as undergraduates continue in their adult lives to live by the Principles of our brotherhood. This refers to the plaque.

That, by itself, would have been sufficient to merit my thanks and my appreciation. Your generosity, however, in addition to the above, was especially touching. Individually, the TEP's produced $2,200. Collectively, with the contribution from the Alumni Association of $500, the total was $2,700.

From the enclosures which appeared in the BROWN & WHITE (student publication) and LEHIGH WEEK (faculty and staff publication), you see that the 6th annual "Good Scholar Election" was the most successful to date. There were fifty-nine candidates and they produced over $20,000. I certainly would never have predicted that Sterling Spatz's idea and the TEP initiative, as promising as it was in its inception, would ever have grown this way. my TEP "brothers" are complimented for taking the risk to begin this activity.

Thank you all.

Fraternally,

Alvin Cohen
